CUP Regional Conference Speakers

Brian Gabrial

At one time a television newscast and field producer for the likes of ABC and NBC affiliates, Brian Gabrial is now a respected professor at Concordia University. His research focuses on the history of the politics of minority discourse, examining how we speak about nationalism, race, gender, sexuality and spectacle in print media.

Gloria Galloway

A national and international correspondent for The Globe and Mail, Gloria Galloway has been a journalist for over three decades. Before working at The Globe, she reported for the Hamilton Spectator, the Canadian Press, and the Windsor Star. Galloway has travelled to Afghanistan on numerous occasions to write both about the Canadian Military operations and the living conditions of the Afghan people. She is also a member of The Globe's parliamentary bureau.

David Gutnick – Keynote

David Gutnick has been working with CBC Radio as a writer-broadcaster since the mid-1980's. He makes it a point of finding alternative ways of telling stories be it in print or on the radio. In fall 2002, David helped produce a number of radio reports for Montreal Matters, a month-long series that took an in-depth look at what money and its influence on our lives. He recently returned from Haiti.

Linda Kay -

Linda Kay has been a journalist for over two decades, covering sports, politics and everything in between. She is a Pulitzer-Prize winner and successful freelancer. Kay currently teaches at Concordia University and focuses her research on pioneering female journalists.

Vincent Larouche -

Vincent Larouche was formerly a reporter for Le Journal de Montreal. In January 2009, when the management of the paper locked out its 253 employees, Larouche was one of the reporters who went on to start Rue Frontenac, an alternative on-line newspaper.

Andrew McIntosh – Key Note

Respected alumni of The Link, Andrew McIntosh was responsible for breaking the Shawinigate scandal in 2001 while he worked for the National Post. The case that sprang from that scandal, Canada v. National Post is still in the hands of Canada's Supreme Court. McIntosh currently works at the Sacramento Bee.

Philippe Meilleur

Meilleur was formerly a reporter for Le Journal de Montreal. In January 2009, when the management of the paper locked out its 253 employees, Meilleur was one of the reporters who went on to start Rue Frontenac, an alternative on-line newspaper.

Lisa Marie Noël

Noël is an independent journalist. She has been a member of the Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec since September 2007. She has worked for such publications as L'Oeil Régional de Beloeil and Les Affaires.

Dru Oja Jay

Dru Oja Jay is a web site designer, writer, editor, organizer and solidarity activist. He's a Montreal resident involved in many organizations such as Haiti Action Montréal, Barrière Lake Solidarity, Reclaim Collective, Tar Sands Free Zone in Montréal, Justice for Missing and Murdered Native Women.

Alex Panetta -

Alexander Panetta is a reporter for and News Editor for the Quebec bureau of the Canadian Press. He has reported from Afghanistan, travelled with Governor General Michaelle Jean to Nunavut and most recently filed from Haiti. He is also an alumnus of The Link.

Jean-François Parent -

Jean-François Parent is staff writer for Montreal’s Transcontinental Business Publishing Group. He is the former managing editor of Sun Media French news website Canoe, he freelanced as a writer and broadcaster for dailies (La Presse, Le Droit, Canadian Press), TV and radio (TVA, Télé-Québec and CBC French Radio) and magazines (L’actualité, Reader’s Digest). He was editor-in-chief of Le Trente magazine, a Quebec journalism monthly. He is a governor and jury coordinator for the National Newspaper Awards.

Loreen Pindera -

Loreen Pindera has been working with CBC radio since 1984. She has worked all over Canada covering politics, aboriginal justice and social issues. Her career in Montreal began with Robert Bourassa's re-election bit in 1989 and she has covered every federal and provincial election campaign in Quebec since. She was one of the first on the scene after the 1989 Ecole Polytechnique Massacre and won awards for her coverage of the Oka crisis a little over six months later.

David Secko -

Trained as a molecular biologist, David Secko was once a scientist in a lab investigating soil amoeba. Since becoming a journalist he has worked as a reporter, columnist and freelance science writer for everything from The Scientist magazine to the U.S. Public Library of Science. He's currently involved in the Concordia Science Journalism Project, established to investigate current and theoretical practices in science journalism.

Craig Silverman -

Freelance journalist and authour and alumnus of The Link. He is the associate editor of PBS MediaShift and Idea Lab. He is the editor of the website Regrettheerror.com which he has subsequently turned into a book. Silverman works as a columnist for the Columbia Journalism Review and Hour.

Daniel Renaud-

Daniel Renaud was formerly a reporter for Le Journal de Montreal. In January 2009, when the management of the paper locked out its 253 employees, Renaud was one of the reporters who went on to start Rue Frontenac, an alternative on-line newspaper. He is currently one of the publication's city reporters.

Jaggi Singh -

Jaggi Singh is a high-profile anti-globalization and social justice activists. He is affiliated with Solidarity Across Borders and the No One Is Illegal collective. He currently resides in Montreal.

Mark Smith -

Mark Smith has worked for Associate Press since 1976. During his tenure he has covered presidential elections, the Sept. 11 attacks, the Oklahoma City bombing, the release of Nelson Mandela and Papal visits. He has won awards for his coverage of Three Mile Island and his coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 2003 he was elected to serve as the president of the White House Correspondents Association.

Giuseppe Valiante -

Former editor-in-chief of The Link newspaper, Giuseppe Valiante has worked for The Gazette Newspaper and the National Post.

Geeta Narang -

A lawyer experienced with media law, Geeta Narang has worked with The Link for years. She is well versed in the rights of the press.
